House History Project-
“Rediscovering Our Past”
It was good to see so many
people
at the slide presentation on Wednesday, August 18th,
in Thirlmere
Hall. You will remember that at the launch of the book “The Story of St
John’s-in-the-Vale” in February 2010,
we expressed the hope that in view of the response we had from people
interested in researching their house histories, we might apply for a
grant
towards the production of a further book. Many will know by now that we
have been
successful, and that we have been awarded about £4,500 towards a
programme of
research which will lead up to a book in the autumn of 2011 or early
2012. This
is designed to be a community project involving as many people as
possible.
The next stage is to produce “house histories” suitable for inclusion on every house (or group of houses in some cases) in St John’s, Castlerigg and Wythburn parish.
In order to make this easier for us we have invited Dr Robert David of Lancaster University to come to help us with the practical information about how to do this. He is coming to speak in
Thirlmere Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday Sept 28th.
This talk will be
followed by a visit for interested people to the new Cumbria Archive
Centre in
Carlisle from 1-30 to 4-30 pm on Tuesday, November 23rd,
2010.
The book will be of similar size to the two previous books by Geoff Darrall, but will be by everyone! There will be space for up to 2 pages per house, and each entry will include a picture. We hope that you may be able to vary the entry with an interesting anecdote or other information rather than being just a list of dates, but we would like to know when a house is first mentioned or built.
Some people have already assembled their house history into a semi-final form; others may have little idea of where to begin. Please don’t be put off; contact Geoff and we will help if we can.
For those who have
already produced material, this will be displayed in “book sized
format” for
people to look at or take and revise on September 28th.
Please come
then if at all possible and don’t hesitate to phone Geoff or Pat
(017687 74500) if
you have a query. If you have e-mail write to
geoff (dot) darrall (at) btinternet (dot) com
{please substitute . for (dot) and @ for (at) }
We expect that
this will be a
continuing process of modification and/or revision over the following
months.
We now have a project
web-site which you can access for news
